The Optometric Minute

Train Staff Well for Medical Optometry

Randolph Brooks, OD, FAAO, advises that a well-trained staff is invaluable as eyecare practices embrace the medical model in addition to providing vision care services. Providing staff with professional training makes them feel confident and appreciated, and it increases staff loyalty and retention.

ACTION POINTS

BE THE CEO. In most practices, the OD is both the primary income producer and the CEO who also handles HR. Value and cultivate your staff for the success of the practice.

INVEST IN TRAINING. Provide staff with ongoing training in both business and clinical issues, and display their certifications in the office. As staff gains confidence in operating testing technology, they feel appreciated–and the OD is freed up to be the interpreter of test results, not the tester.

USE STAFF AS SCRIBES. Having trained staff to input during an exam allows the OD to be more engaged with patients.
