The Optometric Minute

Serving the Multicultural Community Into the Next Generation

Madeline L. Romeu, OD, and her son Anthony D. Gurdak, OD, describe how their practice serves the largely Hispanic community of West New York, NJ. The starting point is being bilingual and having a bilingual staff. Further, everyone in the practice must understand that the Hispanic community is not monolithic; there are cultural distinctions to be noted and respected. Dr. Romeu draws on her own experiences as a first-generation American who has put down deep roots in the community when working with those who have recently arrived in the country. Dr. Gurdak references his travels and medical missions in making a personal cultural connection with patients. Two videos in a series.
