The Optometric Minute

Can Your Practice Serve a Changing American Culture?

Scott Jens, OD, FAAO, of Isthmus Eyecare in Madison, Wisconsin, notes that the American populace is becoming increasingly diverse in urban, suburban and rural settings, alike–and he encourages optometrists to embrace that change. He recommends involvement in community-based organizations like the Lion’s Club to meet new families and invite them to your practice. He also recommends participating in benevolent programs like AOA’s InfantSEE that make a positive difference in the visual welfare of patients. Being involved in these groups and programs provides a key opportunity to demonstrate the full scope of what optometrists do, and, in turn, to attract and welcome new and entire families to the practice.
