PEN Preserving Independent Optometry Returns for Ninth Year

Primary Eyecare Network (PEN) will present the ninth event in its series of programs focused on Preserving Independent Optometry (PIO). This year’s program will focus on “Exceeding Patient Expectations, Social Media and Technology,” and will take place at the Portola Hotel & Spa in Monterey, Calif., on August 10-11, 2012.

“Since the first PIO meeting in 2004, the goal has been to provide programs focused on the specific issues that must be addressed by every independent optometric practice to ensure its success,” says Allen Leck, creator of the PIO concept and this year’s moderator. “However, even though the goal remains the same, we continue to revise many of the strategies and tactics to relate to the changing marketplace, technology and patient needs.”

The one- and a half-day PIO 2012 program features lectures by leaders in the fields of optometry, technology and employment law. Technical presenters will explore ways to maximize technological advances in order to enhance the efficiencies and effectiveness of an optometric practice; topics range from internal management systems to internet capabilities to patient communication. Attorney Ron Goldman will review his “how to” requirements for forming multiple doctor practices and also will discuss some of the legal concerns related to technology and use of the internet.

The final, and perhaps most important topic, at PIO 2012 is the importance of enhancing the patient experience. PEN instructor, Mary Schmidt, will assist doctors in maximizing the effectiveness of the staff and creating a true team culture within the practice. PEN is also bringing back David Zeigler, OD, who will show attendees how to take the patient experience, staff involvement and practice culture to a whole new level.

“For over 25 years, PEN has been committed to providing independent optometrists with top-quality educational programs,” says Debbie Oseguera, director of operations for Primary Eyecare Network. “Doctors often tell me, ‘I can’t find this kind of program anyplace else.’ There are plenty of clinical courses for doctors looking for CE credits, but PEN fills a need by providing practice management educational opportunities for private practice ODs looking to improve their business skills.”

PIO 2012 will take place on August 10-11, 2012, at the Portola Hotel & Spa in Monterey, Calif. For more information and to register, visit www.PrimaryEye.net/PIO or call 800-444-9230.
