Office Manager Certification Course from OD Excellence to Begin New Session

Registration is open for the “Office Manager Certification Course,” to be conducted at the 2014 International Vision Conference, July 31-August 2. The International Vision Conference is hosted by OD Excellence.

A group of 25 office managers completed the first session of the “Office Manager Certification Course” course at the 2013 meeting. In addition, a web-based version of the course was recently launched, and 26 office managers completed the course. This training course for optometric office managers is sponsored by OD Excellence and is endorsed by the University of Houston College of Optometry.

The Office Manager Certification Course is a 12-hour program that enables attendees to master the skills necessary to excel as an office manager in an eyecare practice. Once the course is complete, students must pass a rigorous exam to ensure they have attained the skills required to receive designation as a “Certified Office Manager.”

The Office Manager Certification Course is the first of its kind to feature education, testing, certification and continued enhancement and support. It delivers critical information and training to ensure your practice excels through the efforts of the entire staff. Subjects addressed in the course include:

•    Day-to-day operations: accounting, budgets, managing expenditures
•    Office organization: systems structure and benchmarking
•    Improving financial performance: measure, monitor, aim, reward
•    Managing staff: hiring, evaluation and dismissing
•    Legal and ethical aspects of management
•    Delegation of authority: prioritization, accountability
•    Timeline management: staff scheduling, patient scheduling
•    Meeting management: agenda setting, delegation of reporting responsibilities
•    Handling difficult people and difficult situations

“It is surprising how little some office managers know about the financial and business aspects of practices in which they have worked for years,” says Valerie Manso, who administrates the program for OD Excellence. “Meeting the critical needs for business skills and people management skills is the mandate of this program.”

Manso underscores that the intensified training course is designed for immediate and impactful application by the newly certified office managers. “We impart tools that office managers put to good use every single day, in handling a staff problem or streamlining an office process,” she says. “Our emphasis is on practical application, and our graduates frequently tell us how this training has made them better managers.”
