New Survey Results: What Are ECPs’ Current Top Challenges?

There are many continuing challenges to practices as we head into 2023. Here is what eyecare practitioners reported as their top challenges, and other recent developments in their practices, in Jobson Optical Research’s latest ECPulse Survey.

Staffing remains a hurdle with 54 percent of ECPs reporting that they are still having difficulties finding people to work in their practices.

In pricing, 49 percent of practices increased pricing in some areas, while 29 percent increased prices across the board. Lenses and frames were the most common places where prices were increased.

Some 43 percent of ECPs said they cut costs in 2022, with reducing current product inventory the most common way of decreasing costs.

It was less common for practices to defray financial pressures with a late fee. Just 18 percent of practices reported having a late fee.

In the area of practice security, 63 percent of practices report installing cameras for protection, 28 percent use a policy like the buddy system for bank runs and other sensitive tasks, 13 percent have a panic button in the office, 9 percent use security personnel on site and 24 percent do none of those things to stay secure.

Providing comprehensive, routine care is still the most common way practices generate revenue, with most respondents saying 49 percent of their revenue comes from comprehensive exams and related sales.
