Merger Creates New Company Dedicated to Serving Independent Eyecare Practices

Jan. 25, 2023

IDOC, the largest independent optometric alliance, and Three Rivers Optical, an independent optical laboratory, have combined “to bring an unmatched suite of practice enhancement and lab services to eyecare professionals,” the announcement said.

The two companies, with a 75-plus year combined history of serving optometry, say they have a shared mission of continuing the growth and success of independent eyecare practices. Both IDOC and Three Rivers Optical will continue operating in the marketplace under their existing names, it was reported in Vision Monday.

The management teams of IDOC and Three Rivers Optical will continue as the leaders and owners in the combined company. Details of the merger were not disclosed.

“Three Rivers Optical has a 50-plus year heritage as a leading independent optical laboratory serving customers across the country with exceptional service and quality. We could not be more excited to combine forces with Three Rivers Optical and grow its legacy as an independent lab,” said Dave Brown, IDOC president and CEO.

“Through the addition of Three Rivers Optical, IDOC will add lab services to our industry-leading suite of innovative products and services designed to support the growth of independent practices,” said IDOC COO Oliver Spandow. “Offering lab services through Three Rivers Optical is the perfect complement to IDOC’s existing best-in-class vendor programs, consulting, peer-to-peer networking, practice accounting, marketing, human resources and inventory management services,” he said.

Three Rivers Optical will continue to be led by Steve Seibert and Mary Ann Zappas, who represent the second generation of Three Rivers Optical family ownership. Three Rivers Optical operates out of a 30,000-plus square foot facility in Pittsburgh, Pa.

“We are delighted to enhance and grow our lab alongside IDOC’s suite of services. The combination of IDOC and Three Rivers Optical unifies two innovative companies that are deeply connected and committed to serve the best interests of independent optometry,” said Seibert.

IDOC’s Brown added, “The superior quality and customer service offered from industry leader Three Rivers Optical is the perfect strategic addition for IDOC. Both organizations are committed to independent optometry and the desire for this segment of the industry to prosper and grow. We believe independent practitioners are well-positioned for the future, and the products and services that we offer together will be a key to their long-term prosperity.”
