Maximizing Office Space for Profit: How Two Doctors Do It

August 28, 2019

Your ability to optimize office space can make the difference between efficiently offering all of the services you seek to provide, and falling short in patient care and practice profits. Here is how two practice owners, Jennifer Stewart, OD, and Carla Gavilanes Gasparini, OD,  have maximized their office space or added space to accommodate new services.

How to Set Up a Sports Training Facility
How to Build a Big Practice in a Small Space

YOU CAN START SMALL, TOO. If you have as little as one exam lane you can spare, you can buy a few introductory pieces of equipment and start seeing sports vision patients.

NETWORK.
Contact local sports coaches to introduce yourself, and let them know of the services you provide to athletes. Also get the word out to the athletes at all levels who may visit you for primary eyecare.

LOOK FOR A MENTOR. Find an OD who successfully does sports vision therapy for guidance on emulating their success, and avoiding pitfalls they wish someone had warned them about.

MINIMIZE WAIT TIMES. Create an efficient flow so patients feel they are being attended to. Move them into the pre-test room as soon as possible, and keep them continuously engaged throughout the exam.

INVEST IN MULTI-FUNCTIONAL EQUIPMENT. An instrument that does two things, such as OCT and retinal photography, can streamline processes and minimize the need to move patients around.

GO PAPERLESS. Get to at least 90 percent paperless by integrating all instruments with your practice management system. Paperless efficiency also minimizes the need for storage space.
