The Optometric Minute

Managing Multiple Locations

Ryan Powell, OD, owner of Insight Eyecare Specialties of Kansas City, Mo., describes the process of building and managing an eight-location, 10-doctor network of practices. Under his business model, each location operates as a separate practice supported by centralized back-office staff. Adding practices provides more resources that allow for superior staffing, upgraded instrumentation and enhanced benefits for all employees. This multiple location model allows Dr. Powell to continue to see patients, in keeping with his original vision for his optometric career and life/work balance.

Action Points

Seek expertise. Recognize when you can do something well–and when outside expertise is required to get to the next level.

Designate tasks. Assign specific roles (e.g., insurance, management) to capable staffers who can support multiple locations fulltime.

Capture economies of scale. Having multiple locations creates more purchasing power and allows for enhanced staff benefits.
