HOYA Vision and PPG Industries Host Parent-Education Roundtable at Optometry’s Meeting

To provide a platform for industry dialog, HOYA and PPG are hosting a roundtable of optometrists during the American Optometric Association’s (AOA’s) Optometry’s Meeting on the topic of pediatric vision. “Engaging With Today’s Parents to Promote Pediatric Vision” will be held on Friday June, 28, from 4:30 pm- 5:30 pm at the Hilton San Diego Bayfront Hotel (room 306 B, on the third-floor “Aqua” level), and will be open to optometrists attending the Optometry’s Meeting, optical trade media, and representatives from HOYA and PPG.

“We all know from raising and being around children that they need specific direction from authority figures,” notes Barney Dougher, president of HOYA Vision Care, North America. “Parents can’t do it all alone,” he says, “and it is no different when it come to their children’s eye health and instructions on the benefits and care of their glasses.”

Research Results
Recent research, sponsored by PPG, confirms several areas where eyecare professionals could play a greater role in parent education, including on lens options available for children, and basic care practices for their eyewear. For example, only 41 percent of respondents said they were very satisfied with the amount of education their eyecare professional provided to their child on the proper way to care for their eyeglasses, suggesting that more than half felt their eyecare professionals could have done more. Additional research results will be shared during the event.

Roundtable Overview
To promote children’s eye health, it is essential to engage their parents. Parents are the gatekeepers to their children’s eyecare, controlling how often and whether children visit their eye doctor. Parents also provide direction on how children should protect their eyes on a daily basis with proper eyewear with 100 percent UV protection, and on how they should care for their eyewear, to reduce damage and enhance vision. Healthy habits start young, so proper education of parents–and therefore their children–can influence how well a child sees for a lifetime. The “Engaging With Today’s Parents to Promote Pediatric Vision” roundtable of optometrists will address these and other top challenges in parent education and engagement, and will recommend solutions for promoting pediatric vision.

Following the roundtable event, a paper will be developed to capture insights and provide helpful tips for the industry.
