Myopia Management

How to Build a Myopia Management Specialty

Dec. 12, 2018

Myopia management is emerging as a premium treatment option that can limit the development of high myopia and reduce risk of conditions like glaucoma, retinal detachments and tears, as well as early onset cataracts. It also can be a powerful practice differentiator and referral source. Kim Slaughter, OD, of Lakeline Vision Source in Cedar Park, Texas, shares how she has developed her expertise in myopia management, and how it is rewarding personally and professionally.

Present Families with Options in Myopia Management
Market Myopia Management by Word of Mouth and Family Engagement

EDUCATE PARENTS. Talk to parents about their own vision, and if they are myopic, show how myopia management can help to ensure the eye health of their children long-term.

FREEDOM FROM GLASSES. With OrthoK treatment, present the advantages of allowing children to be free from glasses during the day.

MANAGE EXPECTATIONS. Explain that it’s not a guarantee that the child won’t need to wear glasses some of the time after treatment, but that there are still great benefits to limiting the worsening of myopia.

WORD-OF-MOUTH. Most patients will mention a positive myopia management experience experience to a friend or family member.

TALK DIRECTLY TO CHILD. Present myopia management to children with parents in the room, but address the child directly and candidly.

GET PARENTS ON BOARD. With OrthoK, and the lenses used in the treatment, enlist parents in understanding their responsibility to make sure the lenses are worn and cared for properly.
