Global eye health, the need for refraction and eyewear in underserved populations, as well as cutting-edge technology, were hot topics at this year’s combined meeting of the American Academy of Optometry and 3rd World Congress of Optometry in Orlando in October 2019.
VAST WORLDWIDE NEED FOR EYECARE. The World Health Organization presented findings from the World Report on Vision showing that 2.2 billion people suffer vision impairment–nearly half of that preventable. The report also presents findings on hundreds of millions more suffering from myopia, glaucoma, AMD, diabetic retinopathy and other eye diseases.
TECHNOLOGY AND EYECARE APPLICATIONS. The best of the best in scientific papers and innovations from optical manufacturers were presented to optical media and attendees at the Academy Press Conference. Four companies presented products that incorporate artificial intelligence in addressing ocular conditions.
