The Optometric Minute

Embrace the Medical Model–But Also Provide Vision Care

Randolph Brooks, OD, FAAO, calls for optometrists to embrace the medical model–while continuing to provide routine vision care. To prepare yourself to practice full scope optometry, he advises, continually update your clinical skills and knowledge.

Another key to succeeding with the medical model is preparing your entire practice to aid in delivering medical eyecare services and to code and bill efficiently and successfully. “Delivering medical eyecare demands enhanced staff skills and training,” he says. “The AOA offers Paraoptometric Training,as well as Certification on multiple levels and is an excellent resource.”

ACTION POINTS

SHARPEN YOUR CLINICAL SKILLS. Attend and become selective in your choice of continuing education in order to enhance your clinical skills in areas that are critical in delivering medical eyecare.

DEVELOP YOUR STAFF FOR THE MEDICAL MODEL. Speak with both colleagues, as well as practice management consultants, about appropriate staffing requirements, staff-to-doctor ratios and patient scheduling changes.

CONSULT WITH THIRD-PARTY EXPERTS. Speak with third-party experts in your state optometric association about strategies for delivering medical eyecare including participation issues on medical managed care plans.
