Educating patients about the full scope of your services, including medical eyecare services, is essential to building your practice, says Suzanne LaKamp, OD, FAAO. Teach patients that you are the go-to medical provider when a medical eyecare need arises. An ROB interview by Margery Weinstein, ROB managing editor.

EDUCATE. Explain to patients who come to you after unsuccessfully seeing another doctor why next time they should come to you first. CO-MANAGE. Reach out to other doctors in your community to establish a reciprocal relationship in serving patients, sending patients to them, and vice versa. MARKET. Put a phone number on your practice web site for patients to call for eyecare emergencies, and put that number of your business card, too. |
SET LONG-TERM PLAN. Before and after refractive surgery let patients know that they need to visit annually to maintain healthy eyes. PRE-SCHEDULE. Schedule all the post-surgical follow-up exams as soon as possible. AUTOMATE RECALL. Set up recall to establish annual exams for patients.
